EARTH TECH AWARDED SOLID WASTE TREATMENT FACILITIES PROJECTS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM TOTALING US $33 MILLION
LONG BEACH, Calif. (August 2, 2005) – Earth Tech, a business unit of Tyco International Ltd, and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has been awarded two projects, valued at a total of US $33 million (£18.8 million), to design and build a new solid waste treatment facility in the United Kingdom (UK) and to make operational improvements at two existing waste treatment plants.
For the first project, Earth Tech, in conjunction with its technology partners Linde and Hot-Rot, will develop integrated waste treatment facilities, valued at US $17.4 million (£ 9.8 million), for the Western Isles Council off the northwest coast of Scotland on the islands of Lewis and Benbecula. The work will include the UK’s first commercial-scale anaerobic digestion facility for source-separated biowaste, which will produce biogases that will be used to generate “green” electrical power for the local grid. The project, which is scheduled for completion in mid-2006, will enable the communities to meet the recycling and household waste recovery needs of residents and businesses throughout the Isles.
In addition, Earth Tech will modify and upgrade existing sewage sludge incinerators at Severn Trent Water’s Coleshill and Roundhill facilities near Birmingham, UK. The US $16.5 million (£9 million) project will bring the infrastructure into compliance with stringent European Union Waste Incineration Directive emissions limits by the end of 2005. Additional work will be done in 2006 to improve the plants’ operational capabilities.
“These vital projects will help the communities to meet and preserve their environmental needs,” said Jim Kirkwood, managing director of Earth Tech’s United Kingdom environmental operations. “As a company that is committed to protecting our world for future generations to enjoy, we are pleased to utilise our environmental and construction expertise to assist the Western Isles Council and Severn Trent Water in meeting their goals.”
