earth tech and clugston land usd$51 million ( £ 26 million) contract in berkshire, uk

LONG BEACH, Calif.  (January 17, 2007) – A joint venture partnership between global engineering, construction and environmental services company, Earth Tech, and civil engineering contractor, Clugston Construction, has signed a USD$51m (£26m) deal with Waste Recycling Group to design and build two new waste management parks in Central Berkshire.

The deal forms part of the USD$1.2 billion (£600m), 25-year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) waste management contract between Reading Borough Council, Bracknell Forest Borough Council, Wokingham District Council and Waste Recycling Group, the UK’s leading waste management services and energy recovery company.

Earth Tech and Clugston will design, build and commission the two waste and recycling centres, which will serve 160,000 households and manage over 200,000 tonnes of household waste each year.

John Queening, general manager of Earth Tech’s Environmental Business Unit in the UK, said, “This is a flagship example of a new generation of environmentally-friendly waste facilities in the UK.  With sustainable waste management high on the public agenda, dozens of other local authorities are set to follow suit as they strive to meet new targets to reduce landfill and increase recycling and composting.

“It’s an exciting time for the waste engineering industry and a tremendous opportunity for us to develop and showcase new design and build technologies.  Fuelled by increasing EU pressure, demand for increasingly sophisticated ‘green’ facilities is booming and we’re keen to remain at the forefront of the market.”

Tim March, Construction Director for Clugston Construction, said: “This is an important contract for us which will help us develop our work in the waste sector. Working as a partner with Earth Tech will bring together our very extensive skill combinations, in a sector which is becoming ever more and more important to the public in general and our industries in particular.”

Construction work on the Smallmead scheme will begin in January 2007 and is expected to take two years to complete.  Works for the Longshot scheme are due to commence in April 2008 and be complete by the summer of 2009.
