EARTH TECH ROADWAY NAMED 2005 OUTSTANDING CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT BY ASCE IOWA
Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway Created New Artery into Des Moines' Business District
LONG BEACH, Calif. (October 25, 2005) – An Earth Tech-designed six-lane roadway in the City of Des Moines’ Central Business District has been named the 2005 Outstanding Civil Engineering Project by the Iowa chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
As the lead engineering firm on the project, Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd, and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, was responsible for all phases of development for the 2.6 mile-long Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Earth Tech’s involvement on the project spanned about 20 years, starting with the original corridor location study, the environmental impact statement, traffic engineering, stormwater and bridge hydraulics through the preliminary and final design and construction project management. The project was opened to traffic at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June.
“This project was an ideal opportunity for Earth Tech to showcase our transportation engineering and construction expertise,” said Earth Tech President Alan Krusi. “It will provide a new artery into the heart of Des Moines and contribute to the long-term vitality of the City.”
At a construction cost of $75 million, Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway was designed to serve both as a local access street and to provide a thru-traffic route for an estimated 70,000 vehicles per day, reducing traffic congestion on Interstate Highway 235 and providing a direct route to the Des Moines International Airport and the city’s Central Business District.
Earth Tech provided the final design for the George Washington Carver Bridge, an innovative tied-arch bridge over the Raccoon River that uses post-tensioned concrete, rather than traditional steel, to resist the thrust. The project also included three additional bridges, nine signalized intersections, pump station and metro area raw water line relocation.
