EARTH TECH SELECTED BY THE WOOD BUFFALO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION TO MONITOR AIR QUALITY IN THE ATHABASCA OILSANDS REGION
LONG BEACH, Calif. (February 12, 2007) – The Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) has selected Earth Tech for a three-year, multi-million dollar contract to monitor and maintain the network that provides real-time information on ambient air quality in Alberta’s Athabasca Oilsands region.
Earth Tech will operate WBEA’s Ambient Air Monitoring Network, which collects data round-the-clock on the amount of sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitric oxide and other substances in one of Canada’s largest airsheds. The data is available to community stakeholders through WBEA’s web site and, if an environmental regulatory limit is exceeded, communicated to Alberta Environment and the relevant WBEA industry members.
Executive Director, Carna MacEachern, said that the WBEA is looking forward to working with Earth Tech. “WBEA operates the most extensive ambient air network in Alberta and we are confident that Earth Tech’s knowledge and expertise in the environmental monitoring field will prove to be an important asset to our association,” said MacEachern. “We will be working closely with Earth Tech to ensure that the air quality in Wood Buffalo is continuously and accurately monitored and reported.”
WBEA’s network is comprised of 14 air quality monitoring stations throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, most of which are located at or near the oil sands plants. Additional monitoring sites are expected to be added to the system as new oil sands projects are developed.
“It’s essential for the WBEA to balance the region’s rapid growth and environmental quality,” said Paul Bassi, Earth Tech’s vice president responsible for the company’s operations in Western Canada. “The services we will provide and our successful track record of environmental work in Canada and throughout North America will help WBEA meet this challenge.”
