earth tech awarded design work for santa clara valley transportation authority's silicon valley rapid transit project
New Contract to Continue Station Design Work, Incorporate Feedback
LONG BEACH, Calif. (May 17, 2007) – Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has been awarded a $22 million contract to advance the design work it started in 2004 on six rapid transit stations for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to the 65 percent design completion level.
Under a 24-month contract, Earth Tech’s Oakland, Calif., office will incorporate city and community input on the aesthetic design of the stations and their supporting facilities along the proposed Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project route – a 16.3-mile extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system from Fremont to San Jose. Earth Tech’s team will incorporate that feedback into the 65 percent design completion documents for the stations, as well as the supporting intermodal transfer facilities, pedestrian and roadway bridges, parking structures and new streets. Three of the new stations will be completely underground, requiring extensive structural engineering and close coordination with the tunnel design segment of the project.
“Improved mobility for local residents is central to the region’s future growth and a key element of the VTA’s vision,” said Bill Webb, executive vice president of Earth Tech’s Global Consulting & Engineering business. “The VTA has chartered Earth Tech with the responsibility to help make this vision a reality and we look forward to continuing to support their objectives.”
In addition to the station design contract, Earth Tech will continue as a major subcontractor on two other 65 percent design phase contracts for the $4.8 billion BART extension project. Earth Tech will provide engineering support to HNTB for the 10-mile, above-ground portion of the project, and to a joint venture between Parsons Brinckerhoff and PGH Wong Engineering for the electrical and mechanical systems, including traction power, communications and tunnel/station ventilation.
The VTA plans to contract with the Bay Area Rapid Transit District to operate and maintain the new extension, which it anticipates will be in service in late 2016.
