EARTH TECH AWARDED PORT OF OAKLAND SECURITY PROJECT
$4.7 million contract will provide security enhancements to existing cargo terminals
LONG BEACH, Calif. - March 31, 2003 - Earth Tech has been awarded a $4.7 million design/build contract by the Port of Oakland (Calif.) to provide security system enhancements at existing cargo terminals. Design work on the project has begun. The project will be completed by September. These new security measures are funded by the Transportation Security Administration as the result of events on September 11, 2001.
Under the contract, Earth Tech will serve as the program/construction manager of the project, including engineering and design services.
The security system enhancements consist of three major system additions:
- Video surveillance system. Enhances security by the addition of cameras throughout the ten terminals. The cameras will monitor the perimeter for all of the terminals. Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras are utilized primarily along the fence and waterlines of each terminal while fixed cameras are used at turnstiles and other access points.
- Intrusion detection system. Provides added security at the existing perimeter fences and gates and sends an alarm to the terminal control building and guard stations.
- Automated pedestrian access control system. Utilizes identification cards to control and monitor access into the terminals. This will protect against unauthorized entrance to the port terminals.
Earth Tech has partnered with ADT Security Services on this project.
"Together these three systems will greatly improve the security at this critical West Coast seaport," said Diane C. Creel, president of Earth Tech. "This project is one of several security enhancements being made at the Port, and our design, construction and program management expertise, along with ADT's expertise in security applications, provides the Port with the most innovative security technologies."
The Port of Oakland is the fourth largest containerport in the country. Established in 1927 as an independent department of the City of Oakland, the Port spans 19 miles of waterfront and more than 900 acres of maritime terminal facilities. Port facilities include 10 major container terminals covering almost 575 acres; the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, which covers an area of over 2,500 acres; 1,100 acres of commercial, industrial, recreational and other land; 950 acres of underdeveloped land; and about 9,700 surface acres of water area.
