EARTH TECH RECEIVES 2003 NYACE GOLD AWARD FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE
Reward honors Earth Tech's participation in the$3.8 billion redevelopment program for Newark International Airporttium
LONG BEACH, Calif. - July 8, 2003 -On April 5, 2003, Earth Tech was presented with the 2003 NYACE Gold Award for Engineering Excellence in the category of Building /Technology Systems, for the Newark International Airport (EWR) Terminal C, Newark, NJ project. The New York Association of Consulting Engineers (NYACE) presented 90 engineering excellence awards to New York State engineering firms for the design of outstanding projects in the United States, Canada, the Philippines and Korea. The honors were given at the association's annual gala dinner dance in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
In response to EWR's growth in passenger traffic, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey authorized a $3.8 billion redevelopment program to provide more parking, easier access, better terminal facilities, and fewer delays, conducted in conjunction with Continental Airlines' $800 million Global Gateway Project at Terminal C, launched in 1998.
In a joint venture with architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Earth Tech provided aviation planning, design, and engineering services to Continental Airlines for the expansion at Terminal C. Project features include a new Concourse C3; a new baggage handling facility; a new 1,500-passenger-per-hour customs and immigration processing facility; a new airside corridor; two upper departure levels that double the curbside capacity for departing passenger vehicles; a new lower level dedicated exclusively to arrivals; and a new 134-foot-high centralized operations tower adjacent to Terminal C.
Earth Tech received the 2003 NYACE Gold Award for Engineering Excellence for their comprehensive design solutions related to the mechanical/electrical systems challenges. Earth Tech was responsible for the design of critical systems for Terminal C such as the power distribution system, telephone and data communications network, fire alarm system, emergency generators, electrical substations, chiller plant, and air handling systems.
"Earth Tech is pleased to be honored for its expansion efforts for one of the world's busiest airports," said Sandy Cuttino, president of Earth Tech Consulting in the United States. "We greatly believe that the increased operational efficiency will make flying for EWR travelers a much more enjoyable experience."
Opened on October 1, 1928, EWR was the region's first major airport, built on 68 acres of marshland in New Jersey, 16 miles west of midtown Manhattan. The airport now covers 2,027 acres and serves more than 34 million passengers annually, up from seven million just over 25 years ago.
