EARTH TECH SELECTED FOR TWO CONTRACTS WORTH $5.5 MILLION FOR SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAIL SYSTEM EXTENSION; A THIRD CONTRACT IS IN NEGOTIATIONS
New Design Contracts Build on Long-term Client Relationship
LONG BEACH, CA – April 6, 2004 – Earth Tech Inc., a global provider of construction, engineering, transportation, water management and environmental services, has been selected for two engineering design contracts totaling USD $5.5 million for the Silicon Valley Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) extension and is in negotiations on a third contract. All three contracts are part of the $4.1 billion, 16.3-mile BART extension from Fremont to San Jose, California.
On the first project for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), valued at $2.5 million, Earth Tech will provide preliminary and final design services for the BART extension's electrical and mechanical systems elements. Specifically, Earth Tech will assist in the design of the traction power, train control, communications and tunnel ventilation systems for the project. Earth Tech is part of the design team led by PGH Wong Engineering.
On the second project , valued at $3 million, Earth Tech will provide preliminary and final design services for the ten-mile line segment between Fremont and San Jose. Earth Tech's role will include civil/track engineering, drainage engineering, fire/life safety engineering, hazardous waste mitigation/soils management plan, hydrology engineering, project controls and cost estimating. On this project, Earth Tech is part of a design team led by HNTB.
Finally, Earth Tech and the VTA are in currently in contract negotiations for a station design consultant contract. Once the negotiations are finalized, Earth Tech will be the prime consultant for the design of seven new BART stations, four of which will be underground, and six large parking structures. Earth Tech's team includes 15 subconsultants specializing in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering and fire/life safety systems.
These three projects represent the latest in Earth Tech's over 20-year relationship with the VTA and 30-year relationship with BART. In addition to these three projects, Earth Tech is also presently the prime consultant to the VTA for planning, environmental impact studies and conceptual engineering services for an earlier phase of the BART extension project.

The BART extension is projected to serve 83,600 weekday riders by year 2025. The extension will also serve to connect all of the existing and future passenger rail services in the county, including the Altamont Commuter Express; Amtrak; Caltrain; Capitol Corridor Intercity Rail Service; existing and future VTA light rail projects; and the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport Automated People Mover Connector.
