As part of Earth Tech’s nationwide K-12 program, the company is providing design services to the School Construction Authority (SCA). The SCA is responsible for the design and construction of all public schools within their jurisdiction.
Under major current contracts, Earth Tech is providing architectural, structural, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, environmental, civil, geotechnical (including seismic) design and construction phase services for a number of schools for the SCA. Responsibilities include preliminary inspections and diagnostics, preparation of scope reports, construction cost estimating, alternative designs, contract drawings, specifications, obtaining historic site approvals, agency approvals and construction phase services.
Specific programs completed by Earth Tech under various SCA contracts include:
- Exterior modernization of over 30 schools, including roof replacement, masonry repairs and restoration, parapet repairs and replacement including terra cotta cornices, structural repairs, door and window replacement and site work. The projects involve scoping, design and construction support services. Most of these projects were designed on accelerated schedules.
- Site feasibility studies for 4 sites to locate single schools or a combination of several schools.
- Conversion of existing Department of Education offices in a School Annex into a new Charter School.
- Design of new Libraries, Toilets, Computer Rooms and a Dance Studio.
- Electrical and mechanical upgrades including new Public Address Systems, Security Systems, Telecommunication Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, Fire Protection Systems and HVAC Systems.
- Renovation of auditoriums, classrooms, toilets and entrances for accessibility and compliance for a federally funded after-school program at 10 schools in five districts.
- Civil works around six schools, including new pavement, drainage, fence repair and masonry work
- Conversion of rooms in 11 schools for special use, including computer labs, home economics classrooms, special education toilet facilities, dental lab and nursing care training facility
- Geotechnical investigation and analysis for the foundations of several new school buildings.
- Geotechnical engineering services included a seismic evaluation of a high school within a seismic zone. This evaluation included a review of proposed foundation designs, including steel H-piles and grade-supported slabs, to determine compliance with proposed earthquake design provisions to be adopted by the city.
