The National World War II Memorial is dedicated to all Americans who served in the armed forces during the war years, and the millions who supported the war effort from the home front. The memorial was established by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) and funded almost entirely through private donation. The design architect, Friedrich St.Florian, was chosen through a national competition, with detailed design and construction support provided by a renowned team of architects, landscape architects and engineers.
As a member of the design team, Earth Tech provided all civil and environmental engineering, from conceptual design through final design, and preparation of construction documents.
Earth Tech’s role included a NEPA environmental assessment; a HABS survey; subsurface investigation; design of utilities, roadways and parking areas; design of storm water and groundwater treatment and discharge systems; and remedial design of leakage from the adjacent Lincoln Reflecting Pool.
Earth Tech also had primary responsibility for obtaining project permits, preparing construction phasing plans, and maintenance of vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the three-year construction period. Development of treatment plans for groundwater dewatering, necessary for both construction of the memorial’s sunken plaza and ongoing operation, required extensive coordination with EPA to obtain NPDES permitting of all discharges into the Tidal Basin.
The memorial opened to the public in April 2004 and was dedicated by President George W. Bush on May 29, 2004. The memorial is located on the central axis of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument.
