PROJECT CASE

US Route 460/I-81 Interchange

US Route 460/I-81 InterchangeLocation:
Christiansburg, Virginia USA

Client:
Virginia Department of Transportation

Award: Earth Tech Presidents Gold Award for Technical Excellence (Transportation and Infrastructure)

In 1994 Earth Tech was awarded the design contract for the Route 460 bypass connection to I-81 and the bypass between Christiansburg and Blacksburg. This complex project involved 7.8 miles of roadway, 6 interchanges, 34 bridges (by others), 31 walls, a vehicular tunnel, pedestrian bridge and an extensive sound wall system.

The bypass connections were part of Virginia’s Smart Road system, which is an innovative dual-purpose facility that provides a direct travel link to I-81. It serves as an all-weather test bed for new transportation technologies. Project highlights included an accelerated design schedule, with only 4 years from concept design to construction plans and 3-D “driver view” renderings for the public involvement process.

The Route 460 project has consistently received high evaluation ratings from VDOT, and has generated a number of positive feedback comments, indicating that submissions were above State Standards and that Earth Tech’s knowledge of design exceeded expectations.

Services provided by Earth Tech include; concept study, interchange justification study, roadway design construction plans including a SMART road connection, a multi-level interchange, and construction inspection and advisory services.
