Tianjin is one of the municipalities directly managed by the central government of the People’s Republic of China. It is the largest open port in northern China and is sometimes called the “Pearl of the Bohai Sea.” Tianjin has rich natural resources, a well-developed industrial base and a long cultural history.
The Jie Yuan water treatment plant is the oldest of three water treatment plants that serve the central area of Tianjin. The Jie Yuan plant had undergone several major renovations over the past 100 years and the existing facilities were outdated, in poor condition and required immediate renovation to meet new national drinking water standards.
Earth Tech, as part of a joint venture with the Tianjin Water Works Company, formed the Tianjin Earth Tech Jieyuan Water Co. Ltd. This state-owned enterprise is responsible for a design-build-finance-operate and transfer project that will provide improved water for the 3.7 million people living in the metropolitan areas of Tianjin.
The project includes the design of a dissolved air filtration (DAF) system, demolition of part of the existing facilities, construction of a new water treatment process to supply 132 mgd (500 ML/d) of water, installation and commissioning of an offshore equipment package and construction management. The company will also provide operations and maintenance of the water supply and treatment system for a contract period of 20 years.
