Earth Tech provided the architectural schematic design and functional planning for a new railway subway station located near a major university campus.
This rail station consists of a 200-meter-long underground center platform and mezzanine subway station. It features two headhouse buildings emerging within the context of an old, historic town center. Descending from the headhouses, patrons pass through a series of architecturally significant spaces that create a memorable transition to the trains 18 meters below street level.
The project featured extensive engineering challenges, including the layout and integration of ventilation systems, emergency air and egress systems, traction power and electrical control stations, all below grade. The tunnel construction is a mined, drift vault structure with concrete shell and architectural, metal vaulted ceilings.
One of 17 new stations to serve the first 17 km of the subway system, this subway station provides a fast, reliable, and safe mass transit alternative for its 3.5 million inhabitants.
