Far away in Russia, some unsuspecting travelers were recording on their dashcam and were surprised by a sinkhole event in the road ahead.

A truck used for transporting grout or cement suddenly fell into a sinkhole in the road.  Quite dramatic and startling.  You can watch the sinkhole swallowing the truck here.  Thanks to iafrica.com for the still photo of the sinkhole event.

To those of us in the business of stabilizing sinkholes, the sight of a truck like this falling into a sinkhole looks like a shot across the bow at the very least, a significant casualty in the conflict at worst.  Our grout trucks are kind of like armored tanks in the war against sinkholes.

Our Geotechnical Terminology page offers this definition of grout:

"A cement based material similar to the mortar that is used to lay bricks. A specially designed mixture that utilizes portland cement, fine sand, fly ash and water. Small diameter stone may also be added to the mixture depending on the particular project. This material is typically delivered to the site by local concrete suppliers on residential stabilization projects. Grout material used in residential stabilization projects usually reach about 1000 psi of compressive strength in 28 days. It will typically reach an initial set in about 2 hours."
